Investigative journalist and author Bri Lee joins Breakfasters to discuss Seed, her new Antarctica-set novel inspired by the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. She reflects on discovering the vault in 2020, just as she began questioning whether to have children, and how such dilemmas shaped the book’s ethical and climate-driven core. Having travelled to Antarctica in 2023, she speaks on the meditative strangeness of its blank landscape and the way women disproportionately shoulder environmental responsibility.

Lee unpacks her decision to write from the perspective of Mitch, a middle-aged anti-natalist, and the challenge of philosophising through a man who believes his rational to be objective while blind to his own worldview.
