Spin Cycle: L.A Journalist Ben Comacho’s personal brush with police violence while covering anti-ICE demonstrations
Recently, footage showing 9NEWs correspondent Lauren Tomasi being shot by a rubber bullet while covering escalating protests in L.A made headlines around the world.
Tomasi is far from the only journalist to be targeted while covering the ongoing protests in L.A, with Reporters Without Borders stating that over 30 attacks on journalists by law enforcerment officers have taken place during the past week.
To gain a better insight on what's happening on the ground, Spin Cycle's Charlie Lewis spoke with award-winning L.A based journalist and co-founder of The Southlander, Ben Comacho about his own experience covering the protests – which led to him being shot twice by the Lost Angeles County Sheriff Department on Saturday June 7.
“People are showing up to defend each other, their neighbours, their family members and friends from federal agents that are raiding the streets, workplaces, homes and today they raided a church… federal agents took people from this place. That is what people are so upset about.”
