SmartArts: Director Sophie Hyde's Cinematic Tribute in 'Jimpa'

Writer-Director Sophie Hyde joins Richard Watts to discuss her new feature film, Jimpa - a tribute to Sophie's late father, Jim Hyde.

Jimpa explores Hannah (Olivia Coleman) and her non-binary teenager who embark on a trip to Amsterdam to meet with Hannah's gay father, Jimpa (John Lithgow). The reunion challenges Hannah's parental beliefs and forces the family to confront the past.

Sophie and Richard discuss the passing on of queer history across generations, and the semi-fictional elements of Jimpa that drew from much of Sophie's life.

Jimpa, in part, is the imagining of conversations Sophie's father may have had with her non-binary child, Aud Mason-Hyde - who stars as Frances.

Jimpa opens to general audiences in February, 2026 and is screening at MQFF now.
