Breaking And Entering: François K Interview

Pioneering French-born New York DJ, producer and remixer François Kevorkian is in Naarm this week for a number of special performances. Here he discusses the New York underground of the late 1970s, the enduring relevance of the dancefloor as a space for community, and his current work reconstructing classic recordings live on stage using stem separation technology.

François reflects on his time moving through the foundational clubs of New York's underground scene - Paradise Garage, The Loft, and Better Days - and what those spaces meant to the communities that built them. He draws a direct line from that era to dancefloors today, and to the political moment we're currently living through.

He also talks about Live Stems, the technique he's been developing since the pandemic, which uses AI to separate the individual elements of a recording so he can rebuild and perform it live, improvised, in front of an audience. Every single set is unique.

You can catch François K at The Quadraphonic Club tonight, Friday 6 March, for the In The Moment Radio Launch Weekender alongside Mike Gurrieri and Zepherin Saint. He also plays Golden Plains at the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre tomorrow, Saturday 7 March, alongside Basement Jaxx, Cut Copy, Smerz and more.
