Radio Marinara
Listen to Radio Marinara – 5 October 202501:00:005 October 2025

Dr Beach and Anth are riding the good wave Marinara on the this week.

First up Louisa Schramm, a Research Assistant based on the unceded lands of the Bindal and Wulgurukaba, working at James Cook University's Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research (TropWATER), chatting to us about dugongs, spatial mapping, Ocean literacy and interface of Traditional Owner knowledge and JCU science.

Second is three Masters students from the University of Melbourne, Georgia Walsh, Jack Buckley and Mia Turel, who are working on linked projects on the functionally extinct native Angasi oyster (Ostrea angasi). We know from Indigenous shell middens that Angasi oysters were a major reef forming species on the Great Southern Reef and were accessible from the intertidal zone. Their projects are initial explorations of restoring Angasi in the intertidal zone, including understanding limiting factors and how to design restoration projects. Our last segment is all about Williamstown and locals getting in the water for citizen science and community fun. In the studio we'll be joined by Kate Munckton, of the Jelly Crystal Surveyors, chatting about data this gang of local female snorkellers and divers have gathered on changes in fish abundance at the Crystals, adjacent to Williamstown beach. We'll then cross live to local legend, Sandy Webb, at Sunday morning's Crystals clean-up (https://www.jawbone.org.au/activities) to see how the campaign's going to include Crystals in the nearby Jawbone marine sanctuary. https://www.change.org/p/protect-the-crystals-extend-jawbone-marine-sanctuary
