Listen to Radio Marinara – 4 May 202501:00:004 May 2025

Big weekend all around this one! Kade and Anth will be in the Marinara paddle steamer this weekend. After a quick review of the election result, we will cover a veritable potpourri of marine and coastal stuff!

We like to use environmentally friendly plates and cups etc but how about environmentally friendly devices in the sea used to promote habitat restoration? It makes intuitive sense to imagine that growing baby mangroves in environmentally friendly structures would be better than not, right? Well it turns out that until recently there was no science behind that... Anth will review a paper that came out in April from a major global experiment asking just that question. Tune in to find out...

Restore the Bay is a new project focused on building community power to understand, protect, and restore Port Phillip Bay. We’ll be joined in the studio by project manager Simon Mustoe to chat about how you can get involved! Link to join the conversation & have your say. https://www.restorethebay.org.au/

Rex Hunter is talking about the history of underwater communication cables that eventually joined the world, providing a quick means of transmitting data to the other side of the globe. Up until the development of underwater communication cables in the 1850s the world relied on the latest news arriving by ship, which was months out of date by the time it arrived on the other side of the world. This changed in 1850 when England was connected to France by an underwater telegraph cable. Other developments soon followed, with England and America joined by cable, first in 1858. Australia joined the rest of the world in 1871 with a cable arriving at Darwin. The latest news, stock prices and other important data could now be transmitted and received revolutionising business, for one. Follow this interesting story as Rex traces the history of the humble underwater cable.
