Bron and Dr Beach bring you an hour of all things wet and salty.

• This Wednesday, the State Library of Queensland hosts a free in-person and online event called ‘The Women of the Great Barrier Reef: The Untold Stories of Environmental Conservation in Queensland’. We speak with presenter Professor Kerrie Foxwell-Norton (Griffith University) about the research behind this work, and the extraordinary contribution to GBR fish taxonomy by marine scientist Terrie Ridgeway.

• Dave Donnelly (Killer Whales Australia) joins us to talk about some local baby orcas, and an interesting story this week of a dolphin rescue.

• Surfer Rob Lorenzon was on the look-out for a new companion when he arrived at Lost Dogs’ Home in North Melbourne and met Spike, who went on to not only become Rob’s best mate, but surfing companion and national dog surfing champion. ‘Spike Surfs’ is Rob’s story of the impact of a winning combination of devotion and friendship, and we’ll chat with Rob about his and Spike’s ongoing story.

• And Dr Beach brings you the first 2022 instalment of ‘Life’s a Beach’ – our exploration of weird and wonderful marine science from near and afar. This week Dr Beach takes a deep dive in the polar seas with the work from the RV Polarstern: ice fish nests occupying an area of Antarctic sea floor the size of Paris, and enigmatic sponges feeding on the remains of an extinct species on submarine volcanoes in the Arctic.
