Active in the Melbourne underground scene since 2017, YL Hooi (the project of Valya Ying-Li Hooi) has carved out a unique space with her distinct, hypnotising sonic signature. Seamlessly blending atmospheric dub with post-punk minimalism, her widely praised 2019 debut album Untitled established YL Hooi as a vital voice in experimental music.

Valya joined Lauren from Breaking and Entering in the studio for a chat and a brilliant, dubbed-out guest mix. In the interview, Valya delves into the creative mechanics of her close studio partnership with Tarquin Manek and what it was like collaborating with legendary dub pioneer Mad Professor. She also tracks her musical evolution, tracing the line from her recent NTS Radio special which explored her adolescent love for indie rock and Nu Metal - straight to Running Around (83), her highly anticipated first new single since 2019.
