Primal Screen: Gabrielle Brady on Mongolia, the Climate Crisis, and Decentering the Auteur
Flick is joined by filmmaker Gabrielle Brady to chat about The Wolves Always Come at Night (2024). The docu-fiction which follows Mongolian herders Daava and Zaya who tend to their livestock through different seasons of the land, but who are forced to relocate to the city as they reckon with the reality of climate change. Gabrielle reflects on her time living in Mongolia, and discusses her stratregies for decentering the auteur as a way of minimising the objectifying gaze of the documentary camera. The film masterfully captures the very specific and personal pain of climate crisis for these herders, and prompts us to consider the impact of the climate crisis on our psychological and emotional health, as well as the very real conseqences on our ecosystem.
