Future Perfect: Melbourne’s World-Leading Record Store Boom

A new report comissioned by the VMDO has found that Melbourne now has more record stores per capita than any other major city in the world.

Guest host Ben Harrington is joined by Ethan Holben, lead researcher on the report, and Renae Maxwell, co-owner of Record Paradise, to dive into what the report can tell us about our music consumption, why people are choosing physical media in the streaming era, and the health of Melbourne’s music scene.

“[The report] actually was able to really demonstrate how robust and interesting the vinyl market is here, and that’s everything from 2 of the 3 pressing plants in the country, to 120 retail stores here in Victoria … it’s an immensely big number for a city with this population.”
