Future Perfect: How Vic Government ‘Social Cohesion’ Policy Could Police Free Speech
The Victorian government has announced that organisations that receive grant funding will soon be required to sign a ‘social cohesion’ pledge.
Dylan Bird is joined by journalist Alex McKinnon to understand the new policy, the unclear meaning of ‘social cohesion’ and how this can be weaponised, and why some are warning that it could stifle free speech and further ostracise multicultural groups, as explored in his new article for Deepcut.
“Organisations now have been sent the message that if you criticise the government – whether it’s about the genocide in Gaza or something else – if the government deems you inconvenient, they can and likely will take away your money, and your organisation will effectively cease to exist”
