Future Perfect: First Dog on the Moon on Finding Humour in the Miserable State of the World
First Dog on the Moon (AKA Andrew Marlton) is a Walkley-Award winning political cartoonist at The Guardian, as well as a book illustrator and public performer. He has described his politics as "anarcho-marsupialist".
First Dog joins guest host Nick Feik to chat about the state of political satire in Australia, the legacy of Australian political cartooning compared to political journalism, the rise of One Nation, and the editorial freedoms afforded by the cartoon form.
“These flibbertigibbet parties on the right – while they’re surging with Trumpism and stuff – when people get up really close to them they discover that young people’s wages will be cut and abortions will be banned and childcare will cost double … I honestly don’t know [whether One Nation will explode before or after the election], I’m just hoping it’s funny.”
