Einstein A Go-Go: The Misdirection of Ultra-Processed Foods with Dr Priscilla Machado
Dr Priscila Machado, NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow at Deakin University’s Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition, joins the Einstein A Go-Go team to unpack the global rise of ultra-processed foods and why our growing dependence is a problem for planetary health.
Machado calls for clearer communication with consumers, explaining how additives and colourings create the illusion of “whole foods”. She outlines their links to obesity, type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental health conditions.
With recent The Lancet publication on ultra-processed foods, Priscila joins Dr Shane to explore what governments can do, what individuals can change, and why, as Shane notes, “the more he looks at something, the more he thinks he should avoid it.”
