Radio Marinara
Listen to Radio Marinara – 3 August 202501:00:003 August 2025

Anth & Sir Rexinald Hunter are in on Sunday paddling the jolly Marinara.

Rex has been hunting wrecks and brings us another amazing story from the undersea. With the disappearance of the deep-water sailing ship so disappeared a once thriving ballast trade at the port of Melbourne. With hundreds of ships arriving at Melbourne each year, not all could gain a cargo and would have to take on ballast to get to the next port, usually Newcastle NSW for a coal cargo. Without such, a vessel would capsize in the first storm. Learn from where in Melbourne ballast was dug up and how this was put aboard sailing vessels.

During the recent school holidays, Anth hosted a public panel chat on a cold Melbourne night as a part of the Australian Marine Science Association annual conference. WIth amazing panel members: Jas Chambers- Head of Oceans Decade Australia; James Bradley OAM - Writer and critic; Ryleigh Broughton - a high school student passionate about the marine environment and mobilising youth action; Yaraan Couzens Bundle - Southern Ocean Protection Embassy Collective; and Professor Gretta Pecl AM - Marine biologist and Director of the Centre for Marine Socioecology. Thay chatted for over 1.5 hours and covered a LOT of ground. We will bring you 2 edited highlights covering 3 or 4 of the many topics discussed that night. Why Oceans Matter event is sponsored by Blusink.
