This week we are exploring all things freak! We find the freak within {someone who is strange or unusual. In a playful or neutral sense, it can also refer to someone extremely passionate} Freaks as conduits to the otherworldly, the unknown, the absurd and spine tingling.
Artists who speak to the weirdness of human existence and glimpse its wildish and free essence in the worlds of electronica, jazz, avante-pop, synth-punk and on & on. Transcending time, space and medium. Freaks push culture into its liminalities, bridging discomfort and ugliness with truth, beauty and transcendence.
Raw and real, we are held gently at the edge of the abyss by the tendons and lace of the freak flag, extending like wings from the shoulders of music makers.
This broadcast is interdimensionally bookended by two new FKA Twigs tracks from her Eusexua era, as its loving reception sparked my investigation into all things fabulously freaky and what her mainstream success as an avante-pop savante may suggest about pop culture today.

About this program
Adorning the early hours of 4-6 am, Opium Audia explores thematic and contextual ties of the underground with a hauntological mix of 80s/90s house, electronic, jungle, post-punk, grunge rock, bossa samba and ambient avant pop. Sounds like a memory, feels like a dream. Maybe it was never real.
