Second guest is Dr Tye-Din,Laboratory Head at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) andMathison Centenary Fellow at the University of Melbourne. It is estimated that although 1.5 per cent of Australians are affected by coeliac disease, around 80 percent remain undetected and undiagnosed. Coeliac patients have an immune intolerance to gluten something the body should tolerate is treated as a threat. The aim of Dr Tye-Dins PhD research was to define all of the toxic peptides in wheat, rye, barley and oats find the most important ones that could be used in a therapeutic vaccine to retrain a patients immune system to tolerate gluten.
