Listen to Einstein A Go-Go - 3 July 201647:393 July 2016

Dr Shane is joined by Dr Ray and Dr Ailie. First guest is Professor Simon Lewis Department of Chemistry at Curtain University. Forensic researchers are looking the ancient Egyptian blue pigment as it has excellent properties as a fingerprint dusting powder. Egyptian blue is the oldest known synthetic pigment and has amazing endurance, retaining its luminescence for thousands of years. The ability to make it was lost for centuries but rediscovered in the 19th Century. Second guest is Christina Lucato, from Advanced Molecular Imaging at Monash University. Approximately 90% of cancer deaths are caused by cancer metastasis or the spreading of tumors to secondary sites, not by the original tumor. Recently a protein called P-Rex1 has been shown to be critical in the metastasis of a number of cancers, including melanoma, breast cancer and prostate cancer. The third guest is Connie Landersdorfer, from Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University. New research could change the way critically ill patients across the world are treated. Using higher-than-standard doses of safe antibiotics can help combat the rise of infections caused by 'superbugs' - bacterial infections that resist the current standard treatment regimens. If current trends continue, by 2050 they will kill 10 million people every year.
