The Singer in My Band is the latest studio album from American indie artist This is Lorelei, out now on Matador Records.
This is Lorelei is the solo project of Nate Amos from Brooklyn experimental rock band Water From Your Eyes, a project that has been honed over a decade with a catalog of hundreds of songs quietly uploaded to the internet.
On The Singer In My Band, Amos ditches the electro-pop of his previous solo albums and embraces the country and Americana music that informed his childhood. Amos' signature songwriting style helps breathe new life into the form, with familiar tropes transformed through troubled character studies, offbeat instrumental flourishes and lofi pop production.
The album marks a shift in the career of one of indie rock's most quietly productive artists, coinciding with high profile musicians Jeff Tweedy, MJ Lenderman and Hayley Williams also covering his music.
Written while touring the globe in support of releases from both his bands, The Singer in My Band arrives as the first true ‘road record’ in Amos’ discography. “The ideas incubated while daydreaming in the car without access to any instruments,” he recalls, “so instead of being home and writing on the guitar or a computer, they developed slowly and subconsciously, existing as a sort of intangible thing while looking out the van window.”
Where other musicians might have struggled to find inspiration on the road, Amos embraced the limitations of being without his regular musical tools, utilising his finely tuned songwriting craft to construct his most cohesive and emotionally potent album yet.
