Uncommon Sense: Dr Alison Pouliot Takes Us On A Local & Global Fungi Foray
After an extended hiatus, Amy Mullins returns to the airwaves and is joined by ecologist and author Dr Alison Pouliot to speak about her two latest visually and textually immersive books. They are; Funga Obscura: Photo Journeys Among Fungi (NewSouth Publishing) – a book about fungi and Alison's photography of fungi in the field (as opposed to studio-based photography), and Mushroom Day: A Story of 24 Hours and 24 Fungal Lives (Uni of Chicago Press) – a book which takes us on a global tour of some highly peculiar and fascinating fungi across a 24-hour period.
Illustrated by UK-based artist Stuart Patience, Mushroom Day features Amy's current favourite fungi – the Hairy Nuts Disco (Lanzia echinophila), which resides within the spine of chestnuts in Europe.
If you are fungally-oriented, you can go on a tour with Alison in-person and attend one of her workshops, fungi forays, talks, or other events in Victoria, NSW, the ACT and Tasmania during Autumn – information here on Alison's website.
Past interviews with Alison Pouliot on Uncommon Sense include: The Allure of Fungi (2020), Wild Mushrooming: A Guide for Foragers (2021), and Underground Lovers: Encounters With Fungi (2023).
