Neon Sunset: The Space Lady's Cosmic Return
Beloved underground icon The Space Lady, known for her ethereal electronic performances, recently spoke with Annaliese Redlich on Neon Sunset during her Australian tour. For more than 40 years, Susan Dietrich has been reimagining rock songs into otherworldly electronic compositions using a Casiotone keyboard, all while wearing a trademark winged helmet.
Dietrich's journey began in Boston's streets in the late 1970s. Though classically trained on piano, she took to performing with an accordion and her distinctive headwear. As a street and subway performer, she developed signature interpretations of classic songs, crafting a unique sound that eventually drew an international following.
'I couldn't do anything but what I could do easily and naturally, and that turned out to be a winning formula, just by being true to the tools I had available,' Dietrich shares.
The discussion traces her evolution from subway platforms to festival stages, explores her relationship with the 'outsider music' label, and delves into her creative collaboration with her late husband Joel Dunsany.
