The Mission: Sue-Anne Hunter on the National Commission for Aboriginal Children and Young People

National Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People Sue-Anne Hunter joins Uncle Charles Pakana to discuss plans for the new national commission, currently awaiting senate approval.

In her role, Sue-Anne – a Wurundjeri and Ngurai Illum Wurrung woman – is tasked with representing Aboriginal youth at a federal level.

She talks about how her work within communities for over 20 years will inform her priorities in this new role, which include a focus on mental health, ensuring that the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people are addressed, and staying independent of political parties.

'Our children are struggling. We need to be human about it and need to look at these systems - systemic injustices, not individual cases... we are to raise the voices of our young people.'
