Katie Kiss is the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner at the AHRC. She joins Daniel to discuss the coronial findings into the death of Kumanjayi Walker, a Walpiri-Luritja man from Yuendumu who was shot dead in 2019 by Northern Territory police officer, Zachary Rolfe.
The inquest exposed disturbing allegations of systemic racism in the NT Police Force, a culture of excessive force and impunity, and a series of failures that made his death more likely but preventable. The findings into his death are a painful but powerful reminder of the urgent need for systemic change across police and justice systems to fully address ongoing injustices against First Peoples.
