The Mission: Dr Jill Gallagher on Indigenous Deaths in Incarceration
Daniel is joined by Dr Jill Gallagher AO for a discussion surrounding the continuous high rates of Indigenous deaths in correctional facilities and what can be further done to prevent this. This follows the recent update on Heather Calgaret, a 30 year old Aboriginal woman who died in a Victorian prison in 2021. A coronor found that her death was a result of inappropriately prescribed medication, given to her within the facility.
Jill discusses changes that need to be made by the government to improve these issues, emphasising the importance of rehabilitation rather than punishment, and shares the possibilities of ACCO-led care models.
