The International Pop Underground: The Debut LP for French-Polynesian Outfit 15 15 is a Concept Record Set on a Fictional Pacific Island
Mārara, the debut album for the Parisian collective 15 15, is a concept record. Charting a day in the life on the fictional titular island, it's a bright, sunkissed record that expands into a greater art project filled with design, video and digital interaction.
"This idea of an island that we created is an old, old, old idea, that we wanted to bring [together] all that we made until now, as if it was our own mythology," says Tsi-min Sui, one of the five members of 15 15.
15 15's unique music synthesises traditional elements of Tahitian oral storytelling and Polynesian music into productions that lean on contemporary electronic sounds from club, hyperpop, hip-hop, reggaeton, and ori deck music.
Talking to The International Pop Underground's Anthony Carew, the band's Siu and Ennio Neagle discuss their Tahitian upbringing, their lives as expats, 15 15's cross-cultural sound, the many themes at play across Mārara, and how the flying fish serves as the album's totem.
