On her new album as KÁRYYN, Physics Universal Love Language (PULL), Syrian-American pop experimentalist Kárin Tatoyan uses grand concepts to capture human emotions.
Here, the universal —gravity, dark matter, black holes, magnetism, polarity— are used to evoke the universal: love, relationships, human connection.
"There's a universal truth to being a human. And being in this world. Physics are the laws that govern us," Tatoyan says.
One of her goals for her LP was to "say something universal and use really exciting sounds and exciting language, that isn't necessarily used to talk about love – to use scientific language in a really romantic way."
Talking to Anthony Carew on The International Pop Underground, KÁRYYN discusses how she's been thinking about these ideas for 17 years, how she marries avant-garde composition with pop song form, and how music speaks of the interconnectedness of all things.
