The International Pop Underground: Colombian Composer Lucrecia Dalt on Her Almost-Pop New LP, 'A Danger to Ourselves'

For her new album, A Danger to Ourselves, Colombian composer, producer and songwriter Lucrecia Dalt wanted to make a record "exploring the voice and exploring honesty".

Having issued avant-garde records, made field recordings and scored films, the 44-year-old wanted her ninth LP to be more direct.

"I thought it would be nice to have the voice very present, work around percussion, and try to see if I could create music that hints at a structure that could be more pop," Dalt offers, "with very simple elements and then a lot of sound design. Just because I enjoy, so much, working on tiny details, working obsessively with sound."

Speaking from her home in New Mexico, Dalt talks to The International Pop Underground's Anthony Carew about her intentions for A Danger to Ourselves, the influence of environment on her music, spoken word in songs, and collaborations with David Sylvian and Juana Molina.
