The International Pop Underground: Brazilian songwriter Sessa on the "Third-Eye-Opening, Mushroom-Trip-Type Happening" of Having a Child
Between his second LP, 2022's Estrela Acesa, and his new album, Pequena Vertigem de Amor, Brazilian songwriter Sessa became a father.
In conversation with Anthony Carew on The International Pop Underground, Sessa (real name: Sergio Sayez) talks about making music in Brazilian tradition, making his new album, and making sense of fatherhood.
The latter of which he memorably describes as a "third-eye-opening, mushroom-trip type happening in someone's life: it really relocates your place in time and space."
Pequena Vertigem de Amor is about fatherhood, Sessa says, but it isn't about is about "diapers and vomit". Instead it uses becoming a parent as a prism to explore how people deal with change in their lives.
"It's not that writing about becoming a father was a very deliberate choice," he offers. "But you shake the bush and sometimes the fruit falls, and sometimes it doesn't. I just work with the fruit that has fallen."
