Spin Cycle: Brodie Lancaster On The Artform Of Culture Writing
Former Breakfaster Sarah Smith steps in for the Spin Cycle team while they're on summer hiaitus for a series of long form conversations. First up, a chat with beloved author, critic and journalist Brodie Lancaster about the art of pop culture criticism and writing.
Together they dive into the big questions: What is the state of culture writing in 2025? When do you tell yourself you’re a critic; and what makes artist profile pieces so compelling to read yet so difficult to write well?
“I think I understand criticism much more and I understand what is a work of criticism. It’s not always a review. A lot of people think that a critic just reviews things, but my stance is that a critic is someone that looks at the cultural landscape, picks a thing of interest, provides context around it and tells you what it means right now. What it’s made of – and what it means.”
