Spin Cycle: Australian counter-terrorism police accused of radicalising a 13-year-old boy

The Guardian’s Nino Bucci joins the Spin Cycle team for a chat about his recent explosive reporting into how an undercover counter-terrorism operation had allegedly further encouraged a 13-year-old autistic boy with his fixation on Islamic State after his parents sought help from police and the authorities.

“I think there's two main things that I think this case raises as a concern that I've seen in other cases. and other matters as well… one of those is around the intersection of a law enforcement and intelligence response with a rehabilitative and therapeutic response.

And, and the reason that's problematic is because there's a really important role to play here for experts in countering violent extremism, psychologists, youth workers - in the case of kids like this, even school counsellors and things like that.

But where a lot of it falls down, I think in terms of its effectiveness is that these people… are also feeding information back to police and back to intelligence that is assisting a criminal and I suppose a prosecutorial kind of response.”
