Smart Arts: The NGV's Free Triennial Exhibition Returns This December
The National Gallery of Victoria has announced the exciting return of NGV Triennial for its fourth instalment. NGV Triennial is a free exhibition that will showcase contemporary art, design and architecture from respected and emerging artists from around the world.
Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture at NGV Melbourne, Sam McEoin, discusses the upcoming exhibition and shares some of the artists, themes and upcoming artworks that are set to appear later this year.
Amongst the many exhibiting artworks is Benedikte Bjerre’s, The Birds, where a gallery space is packed with helium-filled penguin balloons. The artwork explores the “impacts of human civilisation on natural systems” and challenges us to think deeper on consumerism, pop culture and the climate crisis.
“Across the exhibition, artists and designers explore transformation in its many forms – material, cultural, technological, personal, political and societal – revealing the present as a site of continuous change. These works invite us to slow down, participate and sharpen our attention.”
NGV Triennial is open 13 December 2026 – 11 April 2027.
