Primal Screen: Cherien Dabis On Filming All That's Left Of You In Palestine

Flick is joined by acclaimed Palestinian American actress, director, and writer, Cherien Dabis as they discuss her third feature film All That’s Left of You. The film follows a Palestinian family across several generations as a Palestinian teenager gets swept up into a protest in the West Bank that is met with devastating violence. In the aftermath, his mother recounts her experiences during the 1948 Nakba that led to this moment of violence.

Inspired in part by her own family, Cherien recounts her family’s experiences growing up in a small US town during the first gulf war, from initially being accepted as part of the community to being villainised overnight and witnessing the ways that Arabs, Muslims and Palestinians were being dangerously misrepresented in the media.

With production of the film set to begin in 2023, Cherien shares her experience of having to evacuate to Jordan after October 7th and the surreal reality of making a film about what’s happening in Palestine while it unfolds before their very eyes.

“[It’s] a story about how people survive political events, it’s not about the political events themselves. It’s about the consequences of these events, and the consequences of violence.”

All That’s Left of You is screening now.
