Orange Juice: Rostam Brings Persian Music Into His World
Tyler's guest on Orange Juice is Rostam, aka Rostam Batmanglij, former member of Vampire Weekend and producer to artists such as Clairo, Charli XCX, Frank Ocean, Carly Rae Jepsen and many more.
Rostam's latest album American Stories is his third solo record, and is infused with Persian sounds and traditionally Middle Eastern instrumentation. Rostam collaborated with artists like Amir Yaghmai (of The Voidz), who is also Iranian-American, to bring instruments like the Turkish saz into the studio alongside steel string guitars.
Discussing this combination of sounds and instrumentation, Rostam tells Tyler: "One concept that I had was I wanted to bring Persian music into my world. Another concept was that I kinda wanted to make a folk album, a guitar album. This record was kind of like the meeting point of those different impulses."
Tyler and Rostam chat about the album as well as some of Rostam's earlier work including Vampire Weekend's Contra, even tracing the influence of U2 and Sigur Rós on the album.
Looking back on the Vampire Weekend track 'Diplomat's Son', which depicts a queer relationship, Rostam says: "It was a big step for me at the time because I was not out in press, and I knew that once that song came out I would come out... One thing that is unique about that song in the Vampire Weekend catalogue is it was sort of a hybrid of narratives, some of which were Ezra's and some of which were mine. And it was sort of us as two songwriters working together in sort of a different way than on Modern Vampires where Ezra wrote almost all of the lyrics and really what I brought to the songs was the music and the arrangements... So I think Diplomat's Son is unique in that way, in that the narrative that the lyrics of that song describe is something that Ezra and I shared in constructing."
