New & Groovy: Alex Pertout’s Viajes

Percussionist and composer Alex Pertout joins New & Groovy to discuss Viajes (Travels), a new album shaped across Cuba, Argentina, Chile, Australia, New York and India. Built over years of experimentation, the record brings together Alex’s original compositions with reimagined traditional material.

Alex reflects on growing up with Afro-Cuban ritual music, and reworking Mongo Santamaria's Longo Itto after years of travel and collaboration. The album itself features an international cast, including Cuban vocalist Sylvia Cabrera, Argentinian saxophonist César López, guitarist Alan Plachta, pianist Luke Howard and bassist Craig Newman.

Alex also speaks on balancing his performing career with his long-running role as an educator, teaching percussion and leading ensembles at the Melbourne Conservatorium.

Viajes is out now on streaming platforms and Bandcamp.
