Indigenuity: Why Yurlu | Country Is A Must-See Documentary of 2025

This week on Indigenuity, Krytal De Napoli is joined by Banjima Traditional Owner Johnnell Parker to discuss Yurlu | Country, a documentary which portrays the final year of her uncle Maitland Parker's life, as he confronts the devastating impact made on country and his own body in the largest contaminated site in the Southern Hemisphere.

Yurlu | Country is directed by Yaara Bou Melhem and explores the environmental ruin that has occurred in the Pilbara as a result of a defunct asbestos mine which was closed sixty years ago. 46,840 hectares of Banjima Country is now a toxic exclusion zone but as Johnnell explains to Krystal, the damage to people of the area is even more horrific.

Throughout the interview Johnnell speaks about educating people through the documentary, her uncle’s legacy and how she and her family will continue to fight for what Maitland Parker stood for.

Melbourne screenings of Yurlu | Country are taking place at Cinema Nova and ACMI.
