Future Perfect: The 34 Australian Women And Children Stuck In The Al-Roj Refugee Camp

34 Australian women and children currently remain in the Al-Roj refugee camp in Syria. An attempt to leave the camp last week was blocked by Syrian authorities, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has taken a hardline approach to the families of IS fighters and said that the Australian government would not support their repatriation.

Dylan Bird is joined by David Shoebridge, Federal Greens senator for New South Wales, to discuss his experiencel last year visiting Al-Roj and speaking with members of the group, the dangerous and worsening conditions of the camp, and the position of the Albanese government.

“We’re at the moment in the worst of all worlds: Australia is not safer because of this angry – I would say racist – anti-immigrant denial that the government has adopted … the kids are definitely not safer … everybody is losing with this, I think the only person who’s winning out of all of this is Pauline Hansen and hateful anti-immigrant politics”
