Future Perfect: Independent MP Andrew Wilkie On Labor Backing Down From Gambling Advertising Reforms
Late last week the Albanese government quietly shelved plans to reform the amount of sports gambling advertising on Australian media until after the 2025 election.
To get a temperature check on the issue, Dylan Bird spoke with Independent Tasmanian MP and gambling reform advocate Andrew Wilkie about gambling reform, Labor’s relationship to the gambling industry and how he may deal with a minority Labor or Coalition government if re-elected.
“[The Government] are scared stiff of the gambling companies… It's almost in Labor’s DNA to protect the gambling companies, whether it be the online gambling companies or the poker-machine companies and the whole sector, pubs, clubs and casinos. But less well understood is just how scared stiff the Government is of the media companies… commercial media pockets hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue from gambling advertising.”
