Dylan Bird is joined by Richard Denniss, Executive Director of the Australia Institute, to discuss centrism in Australian politics and how it has impacted policy and maintained the status quo, and how political performativity is getting in the way of progress, as interrogated in his new essay Dead Centre: How political pragmatism is killing us.

“My concern with centrism is that we keep giving veto power to powerful groups over what we’re allowed to talk about and what we’re allowed to do … when we have this centrist rhetoric, apparently we’re not allowed to do good ideas that are very popular if they make a powerful group sad. I don’t think that centrist, I just think it’s conservative.”
