Einstein A Go-Go: DNA Screening and the Future of Preventive Health

Professor Paul Lacaze from Monash University joins the Einstein A Go-Go team to discuss the results of the DNA Screen study, a nationwide pilot exploring the potential of population-level genetic testing to identify disease risk before symptoms appear.

The program offered free genomic screening to Australians aged 18 to 40, focusing on three medically actionable conditions. Demand was immediate, with more than 23,000 Australians registering within the first week. One in 50 participants carry a high-risk genetic variant linked to early-onset cancer or heart disease; conditions where early surveillance, medication, or preventative surgery can dramatically reduce risk.

Paul also discusses recent legislative changes designed to protect people from genetic discrimination in life insurance, a barrier that had discouraged many from seeking testing. With strong public interest already demonstrated, the next challenge is scaling programs like DNA Screen nationally, shifting Australia’s health system further toward prevention rather than treatment.
