Breaking and Entering: Cut Copy’s Euphoric Return

Dan Whitford of beloved Melbourne electronic act Cut Copy recently spoke with Lauren and Simon on Breaking and Entering about Moments, their first new album in five years. The record processes a period of profound change, capturing a deliberate shift away from the introspection of their last album towards the euphoric energy of the dance floor.

Whitford explained the band was inspired by the creative freedom of 'outsider music', where artists work without a guidebook:

"In the beginning, it's a lot more free because there's no rules yet... and that sort of freedom leads to some really interesting music and interesting ideas. That was sort of what we were trying to channel."

The conversation also traces Dan's disciplined 'song-a-day' writing method (complete with colour-coded spreadsheets), the trailer full of thrift-shop instruments that helped shape the record’s sound, and the story of recording a children's choir in country Victoria for single 'When This Is Over.'
