Baseline: House Music is Black Music with DJ Bridge
Brooklyn-based DJ and multidisciplinary creative Bridget Kyeremateng, aka Bridge, joins Nana on Baseline for a deep dive into the Black and queer roots of house music and the evolution of DJ culture. Together, they unpack the politics, artistry and performance of DJing — from the technical skill behind the decks, to why we face the DJ, to why so many people want to be one. Bridge reflects on the craft itself, from reading a crowd to the ways fashion and movement shape her sets as a performer and house DJ who honours the Black and queer pioneers who built the genre.
Bridge speaks to the enduring legacy of house music, its impact on dance culture today and why it must be preserved. They also explore the power and responsibility DJs hold, and the structural barriers that mean women, especially Black women, have to work harder to prove themselves in a white and male dominated field. Bridge traces the history of the dance floor as a sacred space of community, joy and resistance — from the early days of house to the clubs that became safe havens for Black and Latino queer communities.
Plus, Bridge shares the first ever guest mix on Baseline! A soulful set guaranteed to lift the spirit.
