Banksia: Zapotec Rapper Mare Advertencia on Storytelling and Collaboration

Zapotec rapper Mare Advertencia from Oaxaca, Mexico joined Vanessa on Banksia ahead of their debut performance in so-called Australia in January 2026.

As an artist with a career extending over 20 years, Mare spoke about using her music to speaking on matters including gender inequality and exposes patriarchal power systems, as well as the importance of collaboration.

Mare also spoke about the International Indigenous Hip Hop Festival which brought together a number of artists from around the globe to connect and also collaboration on a track.

Mare returns hip-hop to its powerful roots through speaking truth to power and exploring the hard truths of life as an Indigenous Zapotec woman, exposing patriarchal systems of power and inequality
