Banksia: wani toaishara Discusses Exhibition Exchange and Creative Practice
Congolese award-winning visual artist, spoken word poet and storyteller wāni toaishara joined Vanessa Morris on Banksia to discuss their works in exhibitions Exchange at Blak Dot Gallery and the TarraWarra Museum Biennial 2025: We Are Eagles.
wani spoke about film work Requiem in the Exchange show which explores grief and healing through the lens of the African diaspora.
He also spoke about a film and poetry work presented as part of the TarraWarra Museum Biennial 2025: We Are Eagles, and the space he had to create the work that connects back to his home, the Congo.
wani also has an upcoming performance at the Northcote Town Hall called garçon.
wani works across photography, performance, installation and film, their practice explores Black life and representation, dislocation and Indigeneity as well as the effects of colonialism on Africa and its diaspora, often using his personal history to create intimate and personal works.
Exchange is currently open at Blak Dot until 11 May
