Naarm-based emerging interdisciplinary artist, musician, writer, and visual artist, WAARI joined Vanessa Morris on Banksia to talk about new single release WILT from the upcoming six-track EP MUKI which is expected in November.
As the debut single from the upcoming EP, WILT explores the pain and devestations of colonial practices including stolen land, mining and deaths in custody, along with a sense of mourning and healing. He spoke about MUKI which explores cyclicality through a journey across Blak life, land, love and futurity.
WAARI also reflected on how this solo project allows him to speak up on matters impacting his community where voices often go unheard.
WAARI is a proud descendant of the Waanyi and Kalkadoon people from the Gulf of Carpentaria Country and the Mount Isa region south of the Gulf, and of the Ngāti Mutunga, Ngāti Manu, Te Ātiawa iwis from regions of Taranaki in Aotearoa.
