Banksia: Jenna Lee Discusses Alt/Text Exhibition

Artist Jenna Lee, a Gulumerridjin (Jarrakia) Wardaman and KarraJarri Saltwater woman with mixed Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Anglo-Australian ancestry, joined Vanessa Morris on Banksia to discuss Alt/Text exhibition at Incinerator Gallery.

In discussing the exhibition Alt/Text which is shortened for alternative text, Jenna explained how each artist utilise text, language and visual symbols to alter narratives of representation, identity, community and country. 

Alt/Text features works from Damien Shen, Ebony Birks, Jazz Money, Jenna Lee, Kait James, Libby Harward, Mackenzie Lee, Steven Rhall, and Tony Albert

Jenna also spoke her works including Balarr (To become light) at Melbourne Now at the NGV, Carry Me With You at MARS Gallery and to gather, to nourish, to sustain in the TarraWarra Biennial 2023: ua usiusi fa?ava?asavili.

Alt/Text is at Incinerator Gallery until 23 September 2023.

Jenna Lee and exhibition artists will discuss how the act of altering found objects becomes an act of resistance and reclamation, celebrating First Nations’ artistry on 16 September.
