Banksia: DRMNGNOW on full-length release Ngarwu and Yorta Yorta language

Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, Wiradjuri artist with connections towards the grampians and toward the central coast of NSW, DRMNGNOW aka Neil Morris joined Vanessa Morris on Banksia to yarn about full-length release Ngarwu.

They take a deep dive into the release recorded on Yorta Yorta Country and accompanying film clips filmed mostly on Yorta Yorta County except Garra which was filmed on Taungurung and Dhudhuroa countries.

Songs explore different themes including the Yorta Yorta resistance in Walk On, a hope for the destruction and devastation of colonial systems to end through Pray, the importance of deep listening to Ancestors and Old People through Ngarwu and for self-care through Breathe.

With four of the five tracks including Yorta Yorta language – Ngarwu, Garra, Breathe and Pray – Neil spoke also about the sacredness of carrying language through song and the response it has had from Yorta Yorta people. As well as the importance for future generations of Yorta Yorta to be able to connect with song featuring language.

Neil has plans to release music through project Minyerra and a Yorta Yorta language project in the near future.
