Banksia: Yhonnie Scarce Discusses 'In Absence' Structure Ahead of Craft Contemporary

Kokatha and Nukunu woman and artist Yhonnie Scarce joined Vanessa Morris on Banksia ahead of a live conversation they will be having with architecture studio Edition Office and NGV Senior Curator of Contemporary Design and Architecture, Ewan McEoin, as part of Craft Contemporary 2023.

Yohnnie spoke about the commissioned work that comprised a nine meter high and ten meter wide cylindrical structure of dark stained Tasmanian hardwood split by a narrow walkway and housing two chambers, each filled with hundreds of handblown glass murnong yams.

'In Absense' was housed in the NGV's Grollo Equiset Garden from November 2019 to July 2020 and was created as part of the NGV’s ongoing initiative to present temporary works of thought-provoking and immersive architecture and will be permanent installed in a location soon to be revealed.

Yohnnie was also spoked about their multidisciplinary practice, a work she recently received the Bowness Photography Prize 2023: Finalist, current travelling exhibition Looking Glass with Judy Watson and recently exhibition in New York The Armory Show New York 2023 alongside Johnathon World Peace Bush.

In Absence: Reflections' is presented by RMIT Culture and Craft Victoria as part of Craft Contemporary on Thursday 12 October at The Capitol
