Anna Smyrk joins Banana Lounge Broadcasting to discuss her debut album Spectacular Denial. Produced and mixed by Anna Laverty, Smyrk wrote the record after the sudden death of her father and moves through grief, love, darkness, and hope without pretense of such feelings arriving in any neat order.
In conversation, Smyrk reflects on the catharsis of finally playing these songs live, and on the shift in her sound and presentation toward something louder, dirtier, and more layered. She also leans into the practical side of releasing music; embracing the spreadsheets, timelines, and project-management that gets an LP over the line.
Spectacular Denial launches on 2 May at Northcote Social Club.
