Dropbear: poet Evelyn Araluen Joins The Glasshouse to interrogate the tropes of an unreconciled nation

Poet, cultural critic and Bundjalung woman Evelyn Araluen says her parents wanted to raise “politically aware and resilient Aboriginal kids with these textual influences'', such as Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, and Blinky Bill, “that often misrepresented or tokenised the landscape that they knew and loved”. Says Evelyn, “We can love and be interested in and engaged with problematic things, it just requires a lot of work.” And it’s this dichotomy that influenced her debut collection of poetry and prose Dropbear. Evelyn joins Beth AQ to chat about the collection, opening with a reading of one of the poems.
