No Bad Memories is the fourth studio album from Melbourne electronic royalty The Avalanches, out now via Modular Recordings.
Andy Szekeres (Midnight Juggernauts) joins original members Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi to usher in a new chapter for one of the country's most influential musical forces. Inspired by the simultaneously alluring and insidious ways that advertising and brands embed themselves in our memories, No Bad Memories takes us on a kaleidoscopic journey through digital ephemera and modern electronic production, tied together with the band's trademark sampling techniques.
The album features a remarkable list of collaborators including but not limited to Karen O, John Glacier, Haruomi Hosono, Panda Bear, footwork maverick Khadija Al Hanafi, sound artist Ryoki Ikeda and electronic pioneer Suzanne Ciani. It's this carefully curated list of collaborators that helps bring the band's vision to life, with artists like Ciani and Hosono helping to define the very sonic language of modern advertising and electronic music.
The earliest stages of No Bad Memories involved, as Chater describes it, "rhythmic experiments using the sonic leftovers and hallmarks of the technologies we grew up with. The familiar whirring and coughing of an external hard drive coming to life became a particular favourite, along with hundreds of start-up sounds, chimes and musical logos."
Despite being rooted in the nostalgic pull of commercial jingles and childhood entertainment products, No Bad Memories strength lies in its futurist vision, utilising artists and techniques on the vanguard of modern electronic music to deliver an album tailor made for our current times.
