Matatura is the latest album from Australian born, Namibian raised rapper 1/6, released on Inner Tribe Records. 1/6 (pronounced one sixth) is the moniker of Aaron Stephanus who has notched up decades rapping, forging his reputation in the hip hop landscape as a long time member of The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, formerly as a member of the Black Jesus Experience, and with his own solo work and collaborations.
The album features a slate of talent including Grammy-nominated vocalist Georgia Anne Muldrow, alongside Social Change, Bloomy Meadows, Zoodaka and his brother Willy Dynamo. Backed by producers Inkswel, 2nd Thought, Stay Nice, Royalz, Mista Monk, Isa Ac and Apollo Grimes.
Recorded in November of 2025, 1/6 gave himself 15 minuites to capture rhymes to tracks, and only those that worked in that strict time limit made the cut. The album rolls like a fever dream through vocal vignettes of presidents and police, set to a textural soundtrack of dusty rhythms and forward-sounding soulful hip hop.
But primarily Matutara serves as a statement of self. From the cover that features Stephanus at 3 years old, to his middle name that titles the album, and soundbites of his laughter and humor across the tracks, Matutara sees Staphanus showing us more of himself. As much of an offering to his younger self as it is to any ears who happen upon it. A 7 track statement of power and who gets to wield it, and a reminder to hold, and to heal our inner child.
